Comfort food.  How do you define it? Some may say it's a rich sugary dessert, some a hearty bowl of soup.  In my family, most times, it's defined by mashed potatoes and gravy.

Today, in September of 2019,  I am updating this post for Beef Tips & Gravy, originally posted in April of 2015.

We affectionately refer to them as "farm dinners."  My husband grew up on a farm in a very small town in Iowa.  When we visit, we can almost guarantee that we will get our favorite farm dinner, roast, with potatoes, carrots, cabbage and gravy.  It's just one of those meals that is comforting and feels like home.

Beef Tips & Gravy - An Affair from the Heart

^Love it? Pin it!!^

Growing up for me, it was my mom's pork chops and mushroom gravy.  Still to this day one of my most favorite meals, and my whole family agrees.  Even the boyfriend (now the fiancĂ©,) picks those pork chops and mashed potatoes for his birthday dinner every year.

Beef Tips & Gravy ingredients prep

You can purchases stew meat at the store, or cut up a roast or a round steak if you have that on hand.  I LOVE adding mushrooms to this meal, but I know that not everyone else loves them like I do.  Feel free to omit them if they aren't your thing.

I have a few recipes that call for Kitchen Bouquet.  I get more questions on it than any other ingredient I use.  I always find it by the gravy and seasoning packets in the store.

What is Kitchen Bouquet?

Kitchen Bouquet is a browning and seasoning sauce primarily composed of caramel with vegetable flavorings. It has been used as a flavoring addition for gravies and other foods since approximately 1873.  Some say they are unable to find it in their stores, you can purchase it on Amazon, or Cooks Info has a Kitchen Bouquet Substitution recipe.

As it cooks,  your gravy will thicken, and look like this!   If you prefer it to be even thicker, you can always add some cornstarch to thicken it up even more.
